Joshua Johnson was an American biracial painter from the Baltimore area. He was considered one of the first people of color that made a living as a painter in the United States. After he received his freedom in 1782, Johnson was given a chance to promote himself as an artist. His paintings of prominent Maryland residents are his best known works. Little is known of Johnson's training and/or education, but it appear that he moved a lot, possibly living near the subjects he painted and then moving on. His painting style often depicts images of family or children.
