Andrew Warren, whose birth date in unknown, was born to a successful family of farmers in Coventry, New York. He worked with his family until he began studying art with Tompkins H. Mattison in Sherburne, NY. By 1864 he had exhibited at the National Academy of Design, and by 1860 he had his own studio in New York City. He became known, along with a number of other contemporaries, for making extended trips through Latin America searching for "fresh material" and artistic inspiration. He is particularly known for painting idyllic landscape scenes of Valparaiso in Chili, and was known to be inspired by the poets William Cullen Bryant and Robert Burns.
