Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Barkley Leonard Hendricks is an African American contemporary painter. Hendricks was classically trained as a painter at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Yale University. Hendricks is most well known for his life sized portraits of African America subjects. He was drawn to his models due to an interesting fashion sense or a certain something he saw in their eyes. He painted them with the elaborate style and grandiosity seen in the European portraits of nobility from times past. He stood out from his contemporaries in that he focused his work on portraying a "truthful beauty" as opposed to a romanticized, idealized beauty. His works can be seen at several prominent galleries including the National Gallery of Art, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
