Born in Troy, New York, DeWitt Clinton Boutelle was a self-educated artist who was highly influenced by Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand. Boutelle moved around frequently between New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. He was best known for his combination of both portrait and landscape paintings--all painted in the Hudson River style. His paintings were primarily of the Hudson River Valley, Catskills, New Jersey, and the Susquehanna.
In 1851, Boutelle was elected as an associate of the National Academy of Design and, in 1862, a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Boston Athenaeum, the Washington Art Association, and the American Art-Union, amongst others.
