Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape painter who is considered a central and innovative figure of the Hudson River School. Church was born in Hartford, Connecticut to the son of a famous silversmith and watchmaker, Joseph Church. Church studied under Thomas Cole and, in 1848, was elected as the youngest associate at the National Academy of Design. After settling in New York, Church taught his first pupil, William James Stillman. Church was concerned primarily with bringing a "spiritual dimension" to all of his landscape paintings, which were also influenced by Church's travels to Europe and the Middle East. His first major work was sold to Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum, while his The Heart of the Andes (1859) is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Furthermore, his other paintings were shown at the annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design, the American Art Union, and the Boston Art Club.
