Giorgio Cavallon (1904 - 1989)

A founding member of the American Abstract Artists, Giorgio Cavallon was born in Sorio, Italy before moving to New York City in 1920. Cavallon studied at the National Academy of Design in 1926 and with Charles Hawthorne, Provincetown, Massachusetts. He also attended Hans Hofmann's School of Fine Art. In 1934, Cavallon worked as Arshile Gorky's assistant in the Works Progress Administration/Federal Art Project Easel and Mural Division. His involvement in founding the American Abstract Artists group began in 1936, when he joined other like-minded artists in focusing on the structural quality of art. By the end of the 1940s, Cavallon was connected to the New York School Abstract Expressionist artists. His work has been shown at the Ninth Street Show.
