Born in Salem, Connecticut, American postimpressionist Harriet Randall Lumis’s painting style could be compared to great artists Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. In 1893 she began her art studies in Springfield, Massachusetts and studied under Willis Seaver Adams and
Leonard Ochtman at the New York Summer School. From them she learned the tonalist style. She also later went to study at the Breckenridge School of Art and became a member of the Connecticut Academy of the Fine Arts. Lumis’s rich color palette created tonal effects and made her paintings atmospheric. This was pleasing to the American public and helped her succeed in her art career.
Lumis’s works can be found the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts. They can also be found in various public as well as private collections.
