Hendra Gunawan (1918-1983)

Hendra Gunawan was born in Bandung, West Java in 1918. In his lifetime he was a painter, poet, sculptor and political activist. His works typically portray the lives of Indonesian villagers and common people painted in bright, vivid colors.
As a young man Gunawan was a student of the famous landscape painter Wahdi Sumanta and the expressionist Affandi, and in 1935 the trio formed the Kelompok Lima in Bandung. In 1940 Gunawan helped to establish the Sudanese Heritage in Bandung and the Peoples Artist Studio in Yogyakarta in 1947.
In 1978 Hendra Gunawan moved to Bali, and in 1981 he held his first solo exhibition in Denpasar. His works are quite rare; in addition to several of his sculptures only 120 of his paintings and sketches are known to exist.
