Born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, American artist Hermann Dudley Murphy became known for his portrait and landscape paintings. He
attended the Boston Museum School as well as the Academie Julien in Paris. Murphy was especially talented at painting the human figure. He was highly influenced by Tarbell’s figure drawing techniques. He is considered a “Tarbellite” because Murphy best mimicked Tarbell’s
painterly techniques. Murphy was an Academician of the National Academy of Design and became a member of the Boston Art Club, the Guild of Boston Artists, Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, and more. His work is exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, National Academy of Design, Albright Art Gallery of Buffalo, St. Louis Art Museum, Cincinnati Museum of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
