Jack Wilkinson Smith was born in Paterson, New Jersey and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the Cincinnati Art Academy. He
worked as a commercial artist in Kentucky and later became a sketch artist for the Cincinnati Enquirer. He later moved to California and
created a studio in his home where he established the Biltmore Salon that sold and exhibited the works of local artists. Smith worked in
watercolor but upon moving to Los Angeles he switched to oil paints. Smith liked to travel state to state and this in turn inspired subject
matter for his future landscapes and seascapes. Smith has affiliations with the Salmagundi Club of New York, Academy of Western Painters and the California Art Club.
