Although born in Durham, England, MacDonald moved to Ontario with his family at the age of fourteen. He then later moved to Toronto and
became a member of the Toronto Art Student League. In 1913, he moved to Buffalo, New York where he discovered an exhibit of Scandinavian Impressionist paintings. MacDonald made an impression with his waterfall paintings and later became a member of The Group of Seven. In 1922, MacDonald took on a position as an instructor at the Ontario College of Art. MacDonald’s landscape paintings are now displayed in major Canadian collections.
