American artist James McNeill Whistler was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. Whistler spent time in Saint Petersburg, Russia as well
as Paris and London. Whistler attended drawing classes at the Imperial Academy of Sciences. When he returned home, we entered the United States Military Academy. He did not have much success in other academic subjects, but found his talent studying drawing with Robert W. Weir. He later traveled to Paris where he decided to pursue a career as an artist. The French painters’ interest in Japanese
aesthetics would later influence Whistler’s style of art. Whistler later became an influential printmaker along with creating innovative
paintings.
Whistler is most noted for his paintings of nocturnal London and for his etchings and lithographs. He most famously known for his painting,
“Whistler’s Mother.” Whistler’s works are displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in
Boston, Carnegie Museum of Art, and more.
