John Henry Twachtman (1853 - 1902)

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, John Henry Twachtman began training under Frank Duveneck before moving to Europe to continue his studies. While in Europe, Twachtman studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He focused on etching during this time, though was later more known for his Impressionist works. From 1883 to 1885 Twachtman studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, and many historians consider his work from this time to be his best. Later in life, Twachtman moved to Connecticut, spending much of time at the art colony in Cos Cob.
He is best known for his oil paintings, etchings, and pastels, in addition to a personal impressionist technique. He was also well known for his association with "the Ten", a group of American artists who exhibited together after 1898. His works can be seen in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
