Born in Cincinnati, Joseph Rodefer DeCamp developed his interest in art as a teenager. At the age of fifteen, he studied under painter
Thomas S. Noble at the McMicken School of Design. In 1878, DeCamp left for Munich and attended the Munich Royal Academy. In 1882, DeCamp traveled back to Cincinnati then finally settling in Boston in 1885. Here he taught antique drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
DeCamp is better known for his figurative paintings. He did mostly portraits and figures of women and his painting was influenced by
French Impressionism. His work can be found in the Cincinnati Art Museum, Hood Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,
Smithsonian American Art Museum, and many other private and public collections.
