Born in Jackson, California, painter Joseph Morris Raphael spent much of his career in Europe taking on the style of French Impressionism. At a young age, he practiced art by copying the works of famous illustrators. He then later went on to study at the School of Design in San Francisco where he became active as a newspaper illustrator. In 1902 he traveled to Paris to study at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the Academie Julian. There, he worked as an illustrator for French magazines.
Raphael’s work can be seen at the San Francisco Art Assoication, Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and many other public collections.
