Buehr was born in Feuerbach, Germany. In the 1880s, Buehr and his family moved to Chicago. There, he worked many jobs at a young age
until he was employed by a lithograph company. The company was located near the Art Institute of Chicago where he made frequent visits. He later found employment at the Art Institute and even enrolled in classes there. While working at the Institute, he was able to observe
the artists around him and studied their work. He later enrolled in the Academie Julian in Paris followed by the London Art School. In 1914, Buehr took on a teaching position at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Buehr’s work has been displayed at many private collections. More public collections include the Butler Institute of American Art and
the Union League Club.
