Harris was born to a wealthy family in Brantford, Ontario. Beforestudying in Berlin at the age of nineteen, Harris studied at the Central Technical School and St. Andrew’s College. While studying in Berlin, he took an interest in philosophy. In 1911, Harris befriended J. E. H MacDonald and together formed the Group of Seven. Harris and MacDonald financed trips for the Group of Seven to the Algoma region
and returned there annually for the following seven years. Fascinated by the North Shore, Harris developed is painting style in the 1920s by
creating rich colors and applying thick paints to his landscapes. Harris’s work has been displayed in various public and private
collections.
