Marion Kavanagh Wachtel (1876 – 1954)

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marion Wachtel studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and in New York City. Wachtel taught at the Art Institute before moving to San Francisco in 1903. Wachtel worked exclusively in water color, but later after the death of her husband, she began to also work in oil paints. Wachtel painted mostly landscapes and held regular exhibitions with both the New York and California Watercolor societies. Due to these exhibitions, Wachtel’s work became very well known on both coasts. Wachtel’s work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Stanford University and can currently be seen at the Laguna Museum, Cedar Rapids Museum, and other collections.
