Born in Long Creek, North Carolina, Minnie Jones Evans was an African-American folk artist who is best known for her colorful and imaginative crayon artworks. Evans started to draw in her forties and did not take any artistic lessons before then. Her crayon drawings are often symmetrical and contain character design from a mixture of biblical and mythological imagery inspired by her dreams. Her work can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the High Museum of Art.
