Otto Stark (1859 – 1926)

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Otto Stark began his artistic career around the age of sixteen. He became an apprentice to a lithographer and later enrolled in the School of Design at the University of Cincinnati. In 1879, Stark moved to New York and furthered his art training at the Art Students League. In 1885 he moved to Paris where he spent some time studying art there as well as exhibiting some of his paintings. After some time in Paris, Stark moved back to New York, then Philadelphia, and later finally settling in Cincinnati after his wife’s death. In 1893, he finally returned to Indianapolis where he gave art classes in his studio and became the Supervisor of Art at Manual High School. Stark’s work has been exhibited in shows in Chicago, Omaha, St. Louis, Buenos Aires, and San Francisco.
